Understanding Ayurvedic care

A thoughtful introduction to personalised consultations, treatment choices and safety questions.

An individual consultation

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine with roots in India. A consultation may explore your health concerns alongside routines, diet and medical history. A treatment discussion should take your individual circumstances into account, rather than assume that one approach suits everyone.

Tradition and evidence are different

A treatment's traditional use does not by itself establish that it is effective or safe for a particular condition. Evidence varies by treatment and condition. Ask the clinician what is known, what remains uncertain and whether other medical assessment is needed.

Avoid promises of a cure or guaranteed results. Clear explanations and realistic expectations are an important part of any healthcare conversation.

Natural does not always mean risk-free

Herbal preparations can have side effects and interact with medicines. Product quality also matters. Share all medicines and supplements with your clinician, and ask about ingredients, quality controls and possible interactions before taking a new preparation.

Ayurvedic care should not delay necessary diagnosis, emergency care or an established medical treatment. Coordinate decisions with the clinicians involved in your care.

Questions worth asking

What is the goal of this plan? What are the alternatives? What should I watch for? When will we review it? These questions can help you make an informed decision and understand the next step.
